Pat Garber - local Ocracoke author.

2024.

Pat found a tiny, close-to-death brown pelican nestling on an island near Ocracoke, North Carolina, in the year 1985. Brown Pelicans were, at the time, listed as an endangered species. Pat knew that she could get into trouble for rescuing the bird, but she took it home nonetheless and gradually revived it. She contacted the US Park Service to tell them she had the bird, but heard nothing back from them. She raised the pelican in her back yard until it was a big, awkward but loveable juvinile who followed her around and played with her Doberman pinscher and her siamese cat. Mulligan, as she named her adoptee, was eventually sent to a special school where pelicans learn to live in the wild. This is Mulligan's story.
