My Shining Palace, by Pat Garber

In September of 2019 Hurricane Dorian slammed into Ocracoke Island, changing the island, the author's home, and her life.  It gave her time to revisit and write about her first year here, when she cleaned motel rooms, waited tables, fished her own nets and crab pots, and traveled by bicycle and sailboat. The stories are sandwiched between journal entries of the recovery from the storm.
