Karen Rhodes’s photos exquisitely capture the birds that call Ocracoke home throughout the year. Follow the change of seasons and the ebb and flow of tides and wildlife on the island in this photographic edition, featuring text by naturalist Matt Janson.

Ocracoke Untamed has been in the works for some time and finally February 2026 I received the advanced copies. I have been photographing the birds on the island and nearby areas for about 5 years now, learning about them along the way. I had numerous friends in recent years nudging me to do a Book, when the opportunity and time became available I jumped on it. This was my first book so I wanted to make a big impression! I decided with my graphics art background to create and lay this out myself cover to cover.
 
Spilling through years of photographs, things started to fall into place. I needed some text so I brought my friend, Matt Janson, to collaborate on the project. He also lives on the island, and as a naturalist and bird expert, he was the perfect fit to accompany my Photography with his birding expertise. There was a lot of hard work, stress & gratitude that went into this project, I hope you enjoy it!
